Before My Surgery

To expedite your check-in process, we need to receive your registration form prior to your procedure date.  If not received, the Surgery Center will contact you prior to your date of service.  You may fax your registration form to 310.665.7171, attention Kerlan-Jobe Surgery Center.  The Surgery Center’s direct line is 310.665.7150.

An anesthesiologist will call you the day before your surgery to review your medical history, give you instructions as to what the expectations are for your to prepare for surgery the night before and details about the day of your surgery.  If you have additional questions, please call us at 310.665.7150 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

It is extremely important for you to follow these guidelines before surgery to prevent any delay or cancellation.

Food and Drink:

If you are arriving BEFORE noon:
Do not eat food or drink after midnight the night before surgery. Follow your anesthesiologist’s instructions in regards to taking any medication. 

If you are arriving AFTER noon:
Do not eat or drink after midnight. Follow your anesthesiologist’s instructions as to allowances for liquids.

Alcohol – Do not drink any alcohol after midnight the night before your surgery.

Smoking – No smoking after midnight the night before your surgery.

Makeup, Nail Polish, Jewelry (including body jewelry) - Please remove all these items before surgery. (It is best to leave them at home.)

Clothing – Wear loose, casual, comfortable clothing which can fit over bulky dressings.

Valuables – Please leave any valuables at home.

Notify The Center & Your Surgeon If:

  • You have an elevated temperature, cough, cold, vomiting or diarrhea between your last visit to the surgeon and the day of your surgery.
  • You suspect you may be pregnant.
  • You are taking: diet pills, aspirin, ibuprofen, or certain herbal medicines.  You may need to stop taking any of these 1-2 weeks before your surgery.  You can discuss this with your surgeon. 

What You Need The Day Of The Surgery:

  • Information To Bring – Insurance cards, photo ID, Medicare or Medical Assistance information, numbers and addresses.
  • Driver – You must have someone drive you home.  You should be accompanied, and don’t plan to use taxis or any other public transportation.
  • Escort – A friend, relative or dedicated caregiver MUST stay with you for the 24 hours after surgery.
  • Legal Guardian – A legal guardian must be in the center AT ALL TIMES for children and dependent adults.
  • Care For Children – If you have young children at home you normally care for, plan for someone else to care for them for at least for the first 24 hours following your surgery. 
  • Interpreter – If the patient cannot read, speak English or use sign language, an interpreter is required.  If you need assistance arranging for an interpreter, please contact the Scheduling department 310.665.7150 as soon as possible.
